BBC Music Magazine 'Christmas Choice' for Worcester College
28 Nov 2012
With their first recording on the Resonus label, the excellent choir of Worcester College, Oxford, their director Stephen Farr, along with organ scholars Nicholas Freestone and Edward Turner, have been awarded the 'Christmas Choice' for 2012 in BBC Music Magazine! Described by reviewer Terry Blain as 'a wonderful collection of carols from the last half-century', the disc contains no fewer than twelve premiere recordings, and Blain goes on to say how it is a solution to 'the same old seasonal chestnuts', and that 'Stephen Farr directs delectably sensitive performances, and the sound is immaculate.'
Further praise has come from the Financial Times, with reviewer Andrew Clark proclaiming 'Focusing on English repertoire, [Resonus] has produced a winner for the Christmas market - 20 radiant carols. [...] All are worth hearing.' While Gramophone magazine has noted 'It is all [...] delivered with captivating charm, considerable beauty of sound and unfussy clarity of detail. In addition to drawing some immensely lovely singing from the 23 voices of his Worcester College choir, Stephen Farr adds further distinction to the disc through some robust performances of organ solos by [Kenneth] Leighton and Thomas Hyde.'
