John Scott LVO (1956-2015)

Everyone at Resonus Classics was devastated to learn of the sudden and untimely passing of one it's most recent artists, the organist and conductor John Scott, on 12 August.

Director of Music at Saint Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue, New York since 2004, John had previously been Director of Music at St Paul's Cathedral in London, and had an unparalleled reputation as the preeminent organist and choir director of his generation. John and his outstanding Saint Thomas Choir of Men & Boys had signed as exclusive Resonus artists earlier this year, with the first release a recording of J.S. Bach's Motets. Further recording sessions took place in April with a programme of works for Christmas - this disc was completed and sent to press just days before John passed away. Sadly, John never got to make his recording on the enlarged Saint Thomas's Taylor & Boody instrument, which is currently a work in progress.

John's devotion to music was legendary and, in his short time with Resonus, he displayed consummate artistry and an undimming excitement for making recordings. His future recording plans were many and varied - and it's deeply unfortunate not to be bringing these projects to fruition.

All our thoughts are with the Saint Thomas Choir of Men & Boys, John's assistants Stephen & Ben, his family and friends, and in particular his devoted wife Lily.

John's funeral liturgy, sung by his Saint Thomas Choir of Men & Boys, will take place in Saint Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue, New York on 12 September at 11 am. Further details can be found here.
