Conductor Robertas Šervenikas studied in Lithuania and at the St Petersburg State Conservatory, beginning his international career in 1997 when Mstislav Rostropovich invited him to serve as his assistant at the Evian Festival. Since then he has led orchestras throughout Europe, together with Japan, South Africa, Brazil, Israel and Russia. As well as conductor of the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, in 2008 Šervenikas was appointed Music Director of the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet and began a longstanding collaboration with the Bavarian State Opera. In 2016 the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture decorated Šervenikas with the golden Sign of Honour “Carry Your Light and Believe” for his exceptional contribution to Lithuanian culture and art. His repertoire encompasses opera, ballet and symphonic music, with a special affinity for contemporary works, many of which have been recorded, including a programme of works by British composer Peter Fribbins.
