Alexander Walker | conductor
Alexander Walker has pursued a unique path conducting pioneering performances all over the world. He has contributed to the rediscovery and re-evaluation of a several significant composers with his innovative discography. In 2018, for the Elgar Society honoured him with the Elgar Society Medal for championing the composer’s work in countries where it was not well-known. His recordings of the music of Ignatz Waghalter and of the symphonies by Havergal Brian on the Naxos label have been greeted with critical and popular acclaim. He has also recorded albums of music by Robin Walker and Arnold Griller with Musica Viva for Toccata Classics.
Since completing his studies with Ilya Musin at St Petersburg State Conservatoire, he has worked all over Russia, central Europe and in Scandinavia. He regularly conducts the George Enescu Philharmonic in Bucharest, and other recent collaborations have included concerts with Prague Philharmonia and Belgrade Philharmonic. Until recently he worked regularly with the Russian State Symphony Orchestra, Musica Viva, Symphony Orchestra New Russia and the Russian Philharmonic.
In the UK, he has conducted the BBC Philharmonic, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, City of London Sinfonia, New Queens Hall Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, both in the recording studio and the concert hall.
He has been engaged regularly by the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, conducting performances there, as well as touring with the Royal Ballet to the USA, Russia and Asia. He has been Music Director for Swan Lake for the Finnish National Opera and The Nutcracker for the Norwegian National Opera. As Music Director of Britten’s Turn of the Screw at the Istanbul State Opera, he conducted the first ever Turkish production of one of the composer’s operas.
Alexander is a professor and conductor at Trinity Laban Conservatoire and also teaches conducting at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he conducts the Junior Symphony Orchestra.
