Ana Mafaldo Castro | harpsichord
Over the last four decades, Portuguese harpsichordist Ana Mafalda Castro developed an intensive artistic career and established herself as a renowned soloist, accompanist and teacher in Early Music in Portugal, being also founder and musical director of several Early Music groups, namely the Grupo Foral and the Udite Amanti.
After having finished her piano studies in Porto Conservatory, she moved to the Netherlands where she studied harpsichord with Glen Wilson, Bob van Asperen, Jacques Ogg and Annelie de Mann.
Along her career she played with renowned musicians including Ketil Haugsand, Anner Bylsma, Marie Leonhardt and Andrew Manze, among others, in festivals and concert recitals in Portugal, Spain, France, Ireland, Sweden, Macau and México – here stands out the Folles Journées (Nantes and Bilbao), the Festival San Luis Potosi (México). In Stockholm she played for the Nobel Prize ceremony when José Saramago was awarded with the Nobel Prize of Literature - one of her most grateful moments.
She also played with most of the Portuguese orchestras for opera productions like Handel’s Rinaldo, John Blow’s Venus and Adonis, Haydn’s Lo Speziale, and Amor Industrioso by Sousa Carvalho, and appears regularly in radio and television.
In addition to Early Music, contemporary music is also a repertoire she plays in concert, namely the world premiere of Il ritorno by António Pinho Vargas (dedicated to Ana Mafalda Castro) and Continuum by G. Ligeti.
Ana Mafalda Castro has recorded various albums for EMI Classics, Numérica and Portugaler, being very warmly and well received by the critics.
Teaching is also an important and passionate part of her career, having participated in various courses and master classes, being invited to national and international juries, and since 1990 she is teacher and founder of the Early Music Course in ESMAE (Porto, Portugal).
