David Webb | tenor
British tenor David Webb studied at the Royal College of Music International Opera School as an Irene Hanson Scholar, before joining English National Opera as a Harewood Artist. It was there, in his debut as Frederic in The Pirates of Penzance, that he first encountered the music of Arthur Sullivan in a professional context. His roles with the company also included Lysander (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) and the Young Sailor (Tristan und Isolde).
He has since appeared on many of Europe’s leading stages. Festival engagements include the Salzburg Festival and Glyndebourne Festival and Tour in roles such as Arsace in Cavalli’s Hipermestra; Brighella in Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos; and multiple roles in Handel’s Saul. His international appearances include Teatro Real Madrid, Opéra-Comique Paris, Grand Théâtre de Genève, and Opéra National de Montpellier.
Alongside his operatic work, he is an established concert artist and a sought-after Evangelist in Bach’s St Matthew and St John Passions. He has performed with ensembles including Les Violons du Roy, the Royal Northern Sinfonia, the Arnhem Philharmonic Orchestra, and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. His repertoire also includes Britten’s War Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, and Vaughan Williams’ On Wenlock Edge. Recital appearances include Wigmore Hall with Martin Katz, as well as a performance of Schubert’s Winterreise at Wigmore Hall in support of mental health charities.
Alongside his performing career, David is deeply committed to charitable work, particularly in support of mental health awareness and cancer research. His recent fundraising initiatives include completing twenty-four marathons in twenty-four days in aid of the Institute of Cancer Research.
This recording marks his debut solo album and reflects a long-standing artistic relationship with the music of Arthur Sullivan—one that began at the outset of his professional career and continues to resonate today.
