Martin Jones (piano)

The name Elisabeth Lutyens is synonymous with music that is overtly serial, uncompromisingly modernist, and of daring and fearless individuality. Yet there is much to explore behind the naturally combative and provocative façade of this extraordinary composer, whose music is at various times sensual, thoughtful and delicate, as well as dark, turbulent and even violent.

With a programme of works all composed in the last decade of her life, and containing world premiere recordings, the first volume of pianist Martin Jones’s survey of Lutyens’s piano works includes five works at times startling in their stark beauty, and bursting with both vivid imagery and lyrical fluidity.

'Though Lutyens’s music was often dismissed in her lifetime, it has been quite scandalously overlooked since her death in 1983 at the age of 76 [...] But Martin Jones’s survey of the piano music – in meticulous, clearly affectionate performances – should fill at least one of the yawning gaps.'

- The Guardian

'All in all, this is a rewarding release of utterly idiosyncratic music, eloquently played and cleanly recorded.'
BBC Music Magazine

'[...] it is tribute to his expressive intelligence and natural (selfeffacing?) pianism that it is Lutyens that one hears throughout, not Jones, which is exactly as it should be.'
Gramophone

The Guardian

'Martin Jones is an ideal interpreter of these revelatory and often enigmatic pieces. He brings a deep understanding and sympathy to this music, and that rubs off on the listener.'
MusicWeb International

'Martin Jones' performances are revelatory, his brings a lovely combination of technical skill, toughness and poetry to the music. The uncompromising nature of Lutyens' harmonic world is not disguised, yet Jones' also brings out the astonishing clarity and poetry of her musical gestures.'
Planet Hugill

'Martin Jones brings this very individual music to life in convincing and vibrant performances.'
