Martin Romberg (b. 1978, Oslo) is among the most distinctive voices of Norway’s younger generation of composers, celebrated for his rich neo-Romantic language, orchestral mastery, and melodic temperament.

He studied composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna under Michael Jarrell and Klaus Peter Sattler, and pursued advanced studies in orchestration with Ertuğrul Sevsay.

Since the mid-2000s, Romberg has developed a style that transcends modernist conventions in favour of timeless, universal, and humanist values. Many of his works draw inspiration from fantasy literature (notably J.R.R. Tolkien and H.P. Lovecraft), pre-Christian and Celtic-Christian myth, as well as ancient pagan traditions.

Romberg’s compositions have been performed by leading orchestras and choirs across Europe and beyond, including the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre Régional Avignon- Provence, the Astana Symphony Orchestra, and the Mariinsky Orchestra.

Among his notable works, Homériade (2015) closed the Avignon Festival in a celebrated performance, and his violin concerto Poemata Minora was named Work of the Year by NOPA in 2016.

He has released four solo albums and two symphonic production music albums for Audio Network, recorded as a conductor with the London Session Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios in London in 2016 and 2018.

Romberg is quadrilingual and divides his time between Norway and France, combining composition with cultural entrepreneurship as director of the Nerdrum Museum in Stavern, Norway.
