Richard Pinel (organ)

Marking the fiftieth anniversary of the current Harrison & Harrison organ in St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, prize-winning organist Richard Pinel records a programme of French symphonic works for the instrument.

Opening with Louis Vierne's Second Symphony and closing with Maurice Duruflé's Op. 5 Suite this recital reflects the original vision of the former organist of St George's, Sidney Campbell. Also included is the Pastorale by Jean Roger-Ducasse, which featured on Campbell's first recording of this famous organ.

'It is Richard Pinel's outstanding playing that is the most obvious reason to purchase this CD [...] characterised by an ever-taut expressiveness, never too fast, with a grand sense of line and tempo rubato in the Vierne [...] Every gesture, every tenuto is so well considered, with a palpable sense of struggle and melancholy in the Vierne in particular. An impressive acheivement.'

- Choir & Organ

'Richard Pinel's exemplary playing in itself is a benchmark exercise [...] when panache is required, Pinel can produce it with sizzling effect. This is an instrument with a tonality which demonstrates a sense of le vrai Paris'
Organists' Review

'[...] there can be no doubt of his technical accomplishment--three demanding pieces, not least the five-movement Vierne and the storm section of Roger-Ducasse's Pastorale, where the main theme is played in semiquavers on the pedals. He is also an excellent colourist, especially fond of the softer tones'
Gramophone

Choir & Organ

'Fine examples of French symphonic organ works are to be found on this CD. Richard Pinel presents a wonderfully evocative programme, showing his own musicianship and the suitability of this organ for this repertoire.'
Lark Reviews

'Pinel is a flexible player [...] The entire production is good. The tasteful booklet features attractive colour photos. The characteristic of the English painted pipes is nicely exploited'
