John Scott (conductor)

The Saint Thomas Choir of Men & Boys, Fifth Avenue, New York with their director John Scott, releases a compelling recording of the contrasting and poignant Requiems by close contemporaries Maurice Duruflé (1902-1986) and Herbert Howells (1892-1983), bridged by Ralph Vaughan Williams’s (1872-1958) setting of Mr Valiant-for-Truth’s speech from John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress.

This album marks the final disc in the on-going series of releases from recorded across John Scott’s illustrious tenure with the Saint Thomas Choir in New York.

'This release of two gems of the choral repertoire, sung with both passion and poise, makes an ideal memorial to conductor John Scott, who died in post in 2015.'

- BBC Music Magazine

'This release of two gems of the choral repertoire, sung with both passion and poise, makes an ideal memorial to conductor John Scott, who died in post in 2015.'
BBC Music Magazine

'Their account of the better- known Duruflé Requiem is nicely shaped. Both soloists are highly accomplished and deliver their contributions with conviction. Scott here gives it a neat, slightly cool reading.'
Choir and Organ

'The first thing to strike you, as in so many recordings from this series, is the quality of the trebles. The larger forces of Saint Thomas’s Choir…give the sound greater stability and make for a glossier, smoother blend…[The Duruflé] is equally strong, carefully paced and phrased under Scott’s direction to give the plainchant real direction and flow.'
Gramophone

'As a whole this release is a moving and uplifting memorial to the career of one of the greatest English church musicians in contemporary times.'
Classical Source

'The pairing of these two celebrated twentieth settings of the Requiem makes for a very satisfying CD.'
Lark Reviews

'This is a very successful disc which, like the previous issues in this series that I’ve heard, makes the listener regret all the more the premature death of John Scott.'
