The English Cornett & Sackbut Ensemble

Celebrating their 25th anniversary, illustrious period brass group The English Cornett & Sackbut Ensemble joins Resonus Classics with an illuminating recording of works that would have been heard at the court of James I.

Taken from an extant set of part books from this period of the Royal Music, now housed in Cambridge’s Fitzwilliam Museum, ECSE’s programme explores the repertoire known to have been performed in the royal household, including many composers from the continent.

'It's difficult not to smile, the group’s sonorous burblings the sonic equivalent of a friendly hug.'

- The Arts Desk

'The florid music, by English and European composers is deftly, thrillingly performed'
BBC Music Magazine

'The playing of the English Cornett & Sackbut Ensemble is dazzling. We're talking cornetts, not cornets, the four players conjuring convincingly vocal sounds from instruments which resemble overextended black puddings. Set against a trio of mellow, sonorous sackbuts, the effect is sublime [...] It's difficult not to smile, the group’s sonorous burblings the sonic equivalent of a friendly hug.'
The Arts Desk

'A very nice CD with an authentic, rustic sound. Highly recommended'
Stretto

'Those not used to the sound of a cornett and sackbut ensemble might be surprised at just how sensitive and delicate the ECSE sound is. You never feel as though you are far from the original vocal models, and the purity of tone and intonation is better than that of many vocal groups.'
Andrew Benson-Wilson

'[...] the English Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble bring the music alive. They contribut superb technical skill and play with an involving sense of engagement. '
Planet Hugill

'[...] bright, virile playing... this music is anything but historic recreation. Long may it continue!'
