Steven Devine (harpsichord)

Following his acclaimed recording of Jean-Philippe Rameau’s complete solo keyboard works (RES10214), harpsichordist Steven Devine returns to Resonus to record one of the great pinnacles of the Baroque keyboard repertoire, Johann Sebastian Bach’s Das wohltemperierte Klavier (The Well-Tempered Clavier).

For this first of two volumes, that explores the first book of this collection of forty-eight preludes and fugues, Devine uses an exquisite instrument built by Colin Booth after an instrument by the eighteenth century maker Johann Christof Fleischer.

Tracklist

'Devine’s has a particular seemingly effortless grace, and it’s the one of all I’ve heard in the past ten years that I am happiest to live with.'

- Early Music Review

'His playing throughout is of such a high standard that it is difficult to pick out any particular pieces for comment. Very highly recommended.'
Choir & Organ (5 stars)

'Devine’s readings are flowing and logical, with variety brought to the entire set first and foremost by his extraordinarily sensitive articulation […] His acute sense of the singing line clarifies even the most complex textures. Each pair is imbued with vivid characterisation […] The recorded sound is fully dimensional and true to life.'

Early Music Review

'[...] the combination of Bach’s musical genius and Devine’s musical intelligence will convince that this most mathematical and methodical approach to composition is capable of inspiration'

'[...] it is good to hear his scholarly yet musical interpretations of this staple of the keyboard repertoire'
Lark Reviews

'The harpsichord is beautifully captured, with a fine resonance and good core sound to the note and none of the pecking which can beset harpsichord recordings. He clearly revels in the various keys and allows them to colour his performances, and the result is engaging and engrossing. I certainly look forward to the second volume.'
