The Linarol Consort

Making their Inventa Records debut, the Linarol Consort of Renaissance Viols presents a recording of German, Flemish and French viol consort pieces of the early-sixteenth century - La la hö hö. Recorded from a new edition of a rare manuscript held in the vast collection of the National Library of Austria, in Vienna, the manuscript is not widely known by exponents of music of this period.

The completion of the manuscript dates to around 1535, and soon after it was finished it was in the library of the wealthiest and most influential of German merchants of the sixteenth century, Jacob Fugger, who is held to be one of the wealthiest individuals in history.

'The Linarol Consort, playing four viols by Richard Jones of Powfoot in Dumfries, give us wonderfully idiomatic and vivid performances of this early 16th-century repertoire. And fittingly overseeing it all, Jacob Fugger’s gimlet eye glares out of his portrait by Dürer on the front cover'

Early Music Review

'The Linarol Consort play on a set of viols copied from the one surviving instrument by the Venetian luthier Francesco Linarol.'
Gramophone

'This must be one of the most striking titles for a recording in recent years. Consisting of a recording of early 16th Century viol music from a new edition of a manuscript dating from around 1535. It was placed in the library of Jacob Fugger, a wealthy German merchant. The title of the CD is the name of one of the short works, this one by Heinrich Isaac. An intriguing disc.'
Lark Reviews

'The performances on this disc are outstanding, and the soundworld is seductive and delightful. The players use a set of viols created by Richard Jones and inspired by the single surviving viol made by Venetian luthier Francesco Linarol (c1520-1577). The players have also used early 16th century treatises to select the transpositions of the pieces to suit the tunings of the viols. If all this sounds rather academic, worry not. The results are anything but academic, and take you perfectly back to a different period and era. This is music redolent of its time, yet in vibrant modern performances.'
