The Choir of St Catharine's College, Cambridge
Edward Wickham (conductor)

The Choir of St Catharine’s College, Cambridge with its director, Edward Wickham, present an exciting recording of extended and little-known Psalm settings by the Franco- Flemish Renaissance composer Claude Le Jeune.

Selected from Le Jeune’s monumental Dodecacorde collection of Psalms, each Psalm is paired with a hymn setting of the same text drawn from the Calvin Psalter, harmonised by Claude Goudimel or Le Jeune himself. Framing the recording are versions of the ‘Old Hundredth’ (Psalm 134) and the Song of Simeon.

Tracklist

'I greatly appreciate this recording of four Psalms from Le Jeune’s collection. So far his Dodecacorde has been largely ignored, which is hard to understand considering the quality of these settings. The Choir of St Catherine’s College is undoubtedly a fine ensemble, and the singing is excellent throughout.'

'This is a very interesting and enjoyable release. Psalm-settings by this 16th Century Franco-Flemish composer from his Psalm collection, Dodecacorde, are paired with hymn settings of the same psalms from the Calvin Psalter. Beautifully sung in French under Edward Wickham’s direction'
