Bringing together first recordings of early works by one of Britain's leading contemporary composers, Sally Beamish (b.1956), and the debut recording of music by Philip Lancaster (b. 1977), this album of winter, trees and shadows explores the different ways in which words and music might be woven together.
Taking in the poetry of Emily Dickinson, Ursula Vaughan Williams, Tomas Tranströmer, Sylvia Plath, John Greening and more, songs for voice and violin, performed by tenor James Gilchrist and violinist Philippa Mo, aspire to chamber music, while instrumental works for violin and piano, with pianist Jelena Makarova, take their lines and forms from the poetry that inspired them, or make a conscious effort to turn away from such influences altogether.
